A 28-year-old man from Bogdăneşti village, Santa Mare commune, Romania, who, according to the border police, was smuggling cigarettes from Moldova to Romania, arrived at the hospital in critical condition, after being shot in the head by border guards. The incident took place at the Moldovan-Romanian border.

The border policemen from Cuhnești were informed by their Romanian colleagues that a car loaded with cigarettes was found on the Romanian territory. According to the border police, during the operation of stopping the car, the driver of the car, a 28-year-old man suspected of smuggling cigarettes, was injured and transported to the hospital for medical care. The border police claim that in this case several people are involved. Two vehicles and an inflatable boat were found as a result of the searches.

“The investigations in the region resulted in the detection of two cars that were used by smugglers in the illegal transportation of cigarette packages. At the same time, several people have been identified for whom there is a reasonable suspicion of involvement in cigarette smuggling,” mention the officials from the Border Police.

Currently, border guards in cooperation with prosecutors are investigating the case to establish the circumstances.
