Moldova’s President, Igor Dodon paid a one-week working visit to the United States. During his visit, the President attended several events in New York and held bilateral meetings with several leaders from abroad, including representatives of the American leadership, organizations and business circles. During his visit to the U.S., Igor Dodon held a speech at the U.N. General Assembly, which was met with criticism at home.

On September 22, President Dodon left the country for a one-week working visit to the United States. At the U.N. General Assembly, he gave a speech about the particularities of Moldova’s internal and foreign policy, and the prospects for solving the Transnistrian conflict. 

In New York on September 23, Dodon met with the President of Latvia, Egil Levits, the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, and the President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, to discuss Moldova’s economic relations with each of these countries and the consolidation of bilateral relations.  

On September 24, Igor Dodon met with the World Economic Forum President, Børge Brende, and with the representatives of some Jewish organizations.

In the discussions with the President of the World Economic Forum, Dodon expressed his interest in attending the 50th meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that is to be held on January 2020. 

During his meeting with the representatives of Jewish organizations, Dodon confirmed that at the invitation of the Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin, he will participate in the World Holocaust Forum, which is set to take place on January 23, 2020, in Jerusalem.   

On September 25, Dodon met with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Jomart Tokayev, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohanis, and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

He also held a speech at the High-Level Political Forum on the Sustainable Development Goals, claiming that the Forum will help Moldova to promote its image on the international arena.  

During his meetings, Dodon discussed economic relations between Moldova and each of these countries. With the President of Turkey, he also discussed some aspects of his upcoming visit to the Republic of Turkey that will take place at the end of this year, while with the President of Kazakhstan he discussed the possibility of reciprocal visits at executive and legislative level in 2020. 

On September 26, during the 74th U.N. General Assembly, Dodon met with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, posting a picture on his Facebook page after the meeting. 

During the same day, the President also held a speech at the General Assembly of the U.N. In his speech Dodon mentioned that one of the major factors that are hindering economic development in Moldova is the geopolitical confrontation of the big powers in the region. The President also spoke about Moldova’s neutrality and the country’s intention in following a balanced foreign policy. 

On September 27, the President met with David Hale, State Secretary for Political Affairs of the U.S. State Department, discussing the evolution of bilateral relations, and with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, discussing the agenda of bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the U.N. 

The President invited Antonio Guterres to make an official visit to the Republic of Moldova.

During his presidency, Igor Dodon has made over 20 visits to Russia, two to Brussels, yet none to Romania or Ukraine. The one-week working visit is his first visit to the United States since he took the office.
