Last year, the deputy head of the Anti-Corruption Directorate of the National Anti-corruption Center, Iurie Ciorba, bought a Tesla Model S car. Ciorba indicated that the car is worth 14,000 euros. However, on the mobile.de website, one of the largest car sales portals, the prices of such a car start from 24,000 euros. 

The National Anticorruption Center officer confirmed the purchase for Ziarul de Gardă. He said that he sold two land plots and a car to buy the Tesla Model S car. According to him, he bought a damaged Tesla and the price was lower than the market price.

In his latest declaration of assets and personal interests, Ciorba indicates a Tesla Model S electric car from 2014. The official’s family owns three cars. However, a Toyota Rav4 from 2012 is missing from the 2019 declaration of assets compared to the last year’s declaration. Previously, the Toyota Rav4 from 2012 was registered in his wife’s name, Luminița Ciorba.

Earlier, the official said that the Toyota was purchased by his father from his brother’s money and that he planned to buy it back as it was offered for use.

Officer of the National Anticorruption Center confirmed the acquisition for Ziarul de Gardă. 

“My family owns this Tesla Model S electric car from 2014. It was bought with the money from the sale of two land plots and an older car. All this information is public because it can be found in my declaration of assets and personal interests. In addition, the car was bought in a damaged condition and the price was lower than the market price. This information is included in the declaration,” said Ciorba.

According to mobile.de, the price of a damaged car starts at 23,000 euros and reaches 60,000 euros. 

It is a relatively new car with high-tech features, and it cannot be repaired in Moldova in case of serious damage because it requires specialized service. This car has a unique management system and it can only be restarted by Tesla and its representative offices in case of breakdowns. Any other intervention outside of Tesla is considered illegal.

Ciorba received an annual salary of over 13,000 euros (260,000 lei) while his wife got over 4,600 euros (90,000 lei). The Ciorba family has 728 dollars, over 400 euros (8,148 lei), over 450 euros (8,934 lei), and 733 euros on several bank accounts. The Ciorba family also has a deposit of over 15,800 euros (308,000 lei) with an interest of almost 1,000 euros (20,000 lei). Moreover, Ciorba has debts of almost 20,000 euros that he took in 2012 and which mature in 2020.

Tesla Model S is a luxury electric car built by Tesla Motors, a company created by Elon Musk. The car has been in mass production starting with June 2012. It is the first electric car capable of traveling long distances of over 500 kilometers without recharging batteries.

It is only available with four-wheel drive and has a Li-ion Battery located on the floor, under the passenger compartment. Depending on the battery, the Model S car needs between 5.6 and 6.2 seconds for acceleration to 100 km/h. However, the P100D (Performance) model reaches 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, comparable to a Lamborghini or Ferrari.

The price of a new car starts at 70,000 dollars and it can reach almost 90,000 dollars in terms of equipment. Tesla does not have an office in Moldova and a car cannot be ordered.
