The Government has approved the Regulations for the operation of the Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve. The document will contribute to the protection of flora and fauna species and their habitats, conducting research in the global monitoring system, harmonization of geographical landscapes, and their sustainable use for scientific, cultural, tourist, and educational purposes.

The regulation establishes the objectives, purposes, competencies, the bases of the scientific and economic-financial activity of the Reservation. It is located in the Prut river meadow, covers a total area of over 14,700 hectares in 9 localities in Cahul district, including the lands of the Slobozia Forest District. The Prutul de Jos biosphere reserve was included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, recognized by the Man and Biosphere (MaB) program, is approved by the decision of the UNESCO Conference of the Parties on July 25, 2018.

During the Government meeting, the Minister of Environment, Iuliana Cantaragiu, mentioned that, recently, the European Union proposed to Moldova a project, within the EU4 Environment Program, on supporting activities for sustainable development and protection of natural ecosystems within the Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve.

To ensure the functioning of the Reservation, there is a need of nearly 350,000 euros, but the State Budget Law for 2021, planed only half of the sum. The Ministry of Finance gave a positive opinion on a possible rectification of the State Budget Law for 2021, regarding the allocation of additional financial means.
