During the heated debates on the Eastern Partnership evolution more members of the European Parliament and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, commented on the political situation in Moldova.

On November 27, the European Parliament held debates on the evolution of the Eastern Partnership. During the debates, members of the European Parliament also mentioned the political situation in Moldova.

The Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan said that the situation in Moldova has worsened significantly and the European Union should act because the diplomatic declarations aren’t enough.

He encourages the E.U. to explain the conditions of the E.U. and the pro-Russian party in Moldova partnership, pointing out also that the E.U. expects Moldova’s government to respect the rules. He also added that the E.U. must support the pro-European forces.

Mureșan mentioned that the pro-Russian government overthrowing the pro-European government is a serious issue for Europe’s security in the region.

Romania’s former President, Traian Băsescu also called for the European Union to act, requesting it to determine the Democratic Party and the ACUM Bloc to work together in a coalition and direct the country back to the West.

“Unfortunately, Mrs. Maia Sandu has entered the situation of losing the government alone and deliberately. In Moldova it is a paradox: the opposition, which is made up of two pro-European parties, is witnessing a tough, minority government of the pro-Russian Dodon. It is time for the European Union, which invests money, to ask the two opposition leaders, and who, repeatedly, constitute a majority to do their duty towards Moldova, taking over the government and reorienting the country to the west, ” said MEP Trăian Băsescu, in the European Parliament.

The High Representative also spoke during the debates mentioning that with the change of the Government in Chișinău the need for reforms remains, pointing out that the E.U. support for Moldova remains conditional and the fight against corruption and the depoliticization of public institutions will be emphasized.

“Our priorities are the same as those of our friends in the Eastern Partnership countries, whether it is security, good jobs, good governance or institutions they can trust and rely on. This is the case of Moldova, where we have supported structural reforms to fight corruption, improve the electoral framework and ensure an independent and responsible justice system. Moldova now has a new government, but the need for genuine reforms remains.

As always, the European Union is ready to support reforms in every way possible and, as always, our support remains conditional. Our support is and I think it will continue to focus in particular on the anti-corruption reforms and the assumed interests and on ensuring that the state institutions maintain or build their autonomy and are not politicized, ” said Mogherini during the debates. .

The Eastern Partnership was launched in 2009 as a joint initiative between the E.U. and six partner countries in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
