The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (AP) announces on Thursday, May 25, the completion of the criminal prosecution and referral to the court, for examination on the merits, of the criminal case of indictment of a criminal prosecution officer of the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons and a civilian person, charging them with the crime of trafficking in influence.

The criminal prosecution was initiated in November 2021 by the AP and was initiated on the basis of a complaint by an individual.

“As a result of the criminal prosecution and special investigative measures carried out on the criminal case in question, it was established that the accused, during 2020, from the complainant, demanded, accepted and received, in several instalments, money in the total amount of 25 000 euros, equivalent to the amount of 487 250 lei, in order to influence the prosecution officers of the Centre for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases. They were in the process of conducting and leading the criminal prosecution – the criminal case of accusing the complainant and other persons of committing the crime of organizing illegal migration,” AP representatives said in a statement.

In exchange for the money, according to the prosecution, the civilian person claimed that he could induce prosecutors and officers, through his godfather who is a prosecution officer in the same institution, to adopt favorable decisions on the said criminal case.

“Also, the civilian person, in the period 2020 – 2021, demanded, accepted and received the sum of 25 000 euros, equivalent to the amount of 487 250 lei, in several installments, in order to influence prosecutors from the Hincesti District Prosecutor’s Office, by adopting solutions on the criminal case that they were in charge of regarding the complainant,” the statement added.

The defendants did not admit their guilt, and the criminal case was sent to the Buiucani court for examination. The law provides for a fine of 200,000 to 300,000 lei or imprisonment of three to eight years for the offence.

A person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
