The European Union Is Closely Watching the Situation in Moldova

In a public message, Peter Michalko, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union (E.U.) to Moldova, declared, in the context of the last actions initiated by the law enforcement bodies, that the institution he represents closely monitors what happens to recent criminal cases.

The E.U. ambassador mentioned that the people of Moldova deserve to live in a state without corruption and with functional institutions, which can protect their rights.

“We are closely watching what is happening with the criminal prosecution in Moldova. In recent months, anti-corruption prosecutors have taken important steps in the most important criminal investigations. Moldova needs strong and independent officers, prosecutors and judges, who are ready to deliver real results in the fight against corruption. Moldovan people deserve to live without corruption, protected by institutions they can trust, ” the senior diplomat wrote on Facebook.

The statement of the E.U. ambassador to Moldova comes one day after the Viorel Morari, the suspended chief of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, was arrested, being suspected of abuse of authority and false in public documents.

Peter Michalko is the head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova since May 2017.
