Prime Minister Maia Sandu visits Brussels: “One day we will be ready for the EU and we will knock at the door with confidence”
Prime Minister Sandu was on an official visit to Brussels on July 3. There, she met with Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn. At a joint press conference, Hahn praised the efforts made by the new government in Chisinau in order to continue the reforms assumed through the EU Association Agreement.
At the same time, Hahn confirmed that the European Union could quickly unblock the financial support promised to Chisinau and on standby due to the former PD government. He affirmed that the new Government can rely on European Union’s financial assistance in implementing the governing program.
“There is a strong commitment from the Chisinau Government to pursue the crucial reform agenda based on the Association Agreement. The first Association Council will take place perhaps in early autumn, in order to relaunch the cooperation. The European Union is ready to work with the Government of Moldova on the basis of mutual commitment, respecting the fundamental principles enshrined in the Association Agreement. Now it is time for Moldova to look toward the future. Now it is important that the provisions of the Association Agreement are implemented in order to see tangible results for Moldovan citizens,” the European official said.
In turn Sandu said that the government is ready to implement large-scale reforms and build institutions that will work for the citizens.
“We are committed to fight corruption, which changed Moldova into a gray zone. We want a system of justice that works and acts fairly, with honest and hardworking people. We are determined to show to the citizens that the Government can meet democratic standards and create good economic conditions. The Association Agreement is the milestone for building a democratic European country that meets the needs and desires of citizens. We can only succeed with your support. And one day we will be ready for the EU and will knock on the door with confidence,” says Maia Sandu.
Prime Minister Sandu also had meetings scheduled with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, NATO representatives and senior European officials.
One June 19, the European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn visited Moldova. Hahn said that EU’s financial support could be resumed in autumn.
Since taking office, Prime Minister Sandu made her first visit to Romania, on July 2. There, she had meetings with President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dancila.
