The anti-corruption prosecutors detained a mayor for demanding a bribe. The official didn’t want to attest the end of works by a private company in the field of water supply until the company would give him 20,000 euros.

The anti-corruption prosecutors detained a mayor for demanding a 20,000 euros bribe to attest the ending of works on a water supply construction. According to the prosecutors, the Măcărești commune from Ungheni District benefited from a project for the development of local infrastructure. A private company won the tender for the construction.

The prosecutors found that the mayor of the Măcărești commune intentionally delayed for months and created impediments for the private company to finalize the works. The mayor, together with another worker, would have conditioned the private company to give them a car as a bribe or the equivalent in cash, 20,000 euros to attest the ending of the works.

According to the prosecutors, the private company transferred 5,000 euros under their control to prove the mayor’s demand for a bribe. The two suspects were detained and risk up to 10 years in prison and losing the right to hold a public office for a period.
