The United States is concerned about the situation in Moldova \tfollowing the violence on April 7. Although order has been restored \tand subsequent demonstrations have been peaceful, we have received \treports from civil society and international observers of \tmistreatment of those detained by Moldovan authorities. We are also \ttroubled by reports that students and journalists have been \tintimidated by government officials. President Voronin\u2019s \tannouncement of an amnesty for many of those detained is an \tencouraging step toward reconciliation.<\/dt>\n
\n<\/dt>\n
We urge the government to act in accordance with Moldovan law \tand its international obligations when dealing with the opposition, \tprotesters, and the media. All parties need to conduct themselves \tresponsibly. It is also important that the government reach out to \topposition parties and address their concerns about the April 5 \telection in a cooperative and transparent manner. We stress that \tthere is no excuse for violence, such as took place on April 7. The \tUnited States remains committed to working closely with Moldova and \tits people as the country continues down the path of European \tintegration. Respect for the rule of law and human rights are key \telements in our relationship.<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
