Letter of Concern on Recent Human Rights Violations On the occasion of your visit to \tPrinceton University to deliver the keynote address for the 2009 \tPrinceton Colloquium on Public and International Affairs, we want to \tforward you the following letter of concern on behalf of the \tstudents and faculty from campus with regards to gross on-going \thuman rights violations in the Republic of Moldova, stemming from \tevents that occurred in the aftermath of the Parliamentary \tElections. We want to express our deep concern with several abuses \texerted by the Moldovan government on its citizens and urge for a \tprompt and thoughtful response from your organization.<\/p>\n In \tparticular, our concern and solidarity is directed at peer youth and \tstudents from Moldova, journalists, activists and academics who have \tpeacefully protested against an authoritarian government and as a \tresult have been subjected to detention, torture, loss of jobs and \teven murder.<\/p>\n A serious number of human rights have been and \tcontinue to be blatantly violated. All are evidenced by \tinternational and local observers in the region (Edwin Berry<\/em>, \tHuman Rights Adviser to the UN, members of the European Parliament \tGraham Watson<\/em>, Emma Nicholson<\/em>, Renate Weber<\/em>) \twhile a large number of abuses are documented in audio-video format \tby the Office of the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca<\/em>.<\/p>\n In \twhat follows, we limit our analysis to the violation of the \tfollowing articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/em>, \ta core part of the very UN identity, which Moldova is committed to \trespecting.<\/p>\n * The right to life, liberty and security of \tperson (Article 3<\/em>).<\/p>\n * The right not be subjected to \ttorture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (Article \t5<\/em>).<\/p>\n * The right to recognition everywhere as a person \tbefore the law (Article 6<\/em>).<\/p>\n * Equality before the law \tand the right to equal protection of the law (Article 7<\/em>).<\/p>\n * \tThe right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals \tfor acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the \tconstitution or by law (Article 8<\/em>).<\/p>\n * The right not to \tbe subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile (Article \t9<\/em>).<\/p>\n * The right to a fair and public hearing by an \tindependent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his \trights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him \t(Article 10<\/em>). <\/dt>\n * The right to \tfreedom of opinion and expression, including freedom to hold \topinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart \tinformation and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers \t(Article 19<\/em>).<\/p>\n * The right to freedom of peaceful \tassembly and association (Article 20<\/em>). <\/dt>\n We hope that the international community can intervene \tto stop the violence and protect the citizens of Moldova, in full \tsupport of your appeal to “act on our collective \tresponsibility to uphold the rights enshrined in the Universal \tDeclaration<\/em>” (Human Rights Day, December 2008), which we \tsalute.<\/p>\n This letter is supported by several university groups \tacross the United States, who share similar concerns for the safety \tand well-being of their Moldovan counterparts.
