Hundreds of reporters and activists from around the world gathered in London, on July 10 to discuss freedom of expression and the situation of journalists in difficult areas: regions with armed conflicts, totalitarian regimes, states where concentration of the press reaches maximum odds, and access to information is increasingly difficult.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Official data shows that only 13% of the world’s population has access to a free and impartial media while 87% of the world’s citizens have limited access to a free media because of the inadequate conditions of journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year a record number of reporters were killed while doing their job: 99 and several hundred others were imprisoned for their professional activity. At the same time 9 out of 10 cases of journalists being killed remain intractable \u200b\u200bby the law enforcement agencies.
<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

About 1,000 representatives of the media, civil society and government institutions attended the event. The talks addressed free access to information, transparency of media owners, journalists’ security, and a change in attitudes to media freedom at global level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Republic of Moldova is represented at the Global Conference for Media Freedom by Ziarul de Garda. The event is supported by the Government of Great Britain and Canada.
