Last week, Moldova\u2019s Prime Minister Ion Chicu was in Minsk, Belarus. Prime Minister Chicu attended the <\/strong>Eurasian Economic Union summit<\/strong><\/a>. Moldova has the status of the observer within the Euroasian Economic Union. When he returned to Moldova, Prime Minister Chicu signed an agreement with the European Union (EU).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Euroasian Economic Union includes five states<\/a> that have big problems. Russia is a member of the Union. For 30 years, Russian armies have been illegally stationed on the territories of the former Soviet Union states, including Moldova. Belarus, a European state where human rights have been labeled as poor, is also a member of the Union. Another member of the Union is Kazakhstan. In 2019, the country\u2019s capital was re-named Nursultan, in honor of Nursultan Nazarbayev, an oppressive leader, who has ruled the country for decades. Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Union too. Kyrgyzstan is one of the most corrupt states<\/a>, where even Moldovan oligarchs have laundered money. Armenia, a state with a new president but with very old problems, is also a member of the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Moldova holds no membership in the Union, the Prime Minister of Moldova attended the summit, together with the Prime Ministers of the five states, plenipotentiary members of the Euroasian Economic Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moldova does not border with any state in this Union. President Igor Dodon pleaded for Moldova to become an observer state in the Union, without rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe that any Union or collaboration has the right to exist and can bring much good to states, if it is based on citizens\u2019 interests, on actions that would improve the lives of ordinary people. However, this Union seems to be a toy for oligarchs, interested in defending their wellbeing to the detriment of the citizens\u2019 interests and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the day Prime Minister Chicu left for Minsk to attend the summit as an observer, street protests took place in Minsk and Chi\u0219in\u0103u. In Minsk, people were protesting for political rights, for the possibility of running in the elections. In Chi\u0219in\u0103u, Transnistria War veterans asked for social and political rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
