{"id":1665,"date":"2019-09-29T15:03:06","date_gmt":"2019-09-29T13:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zdg.md\/eng\/?p=1665"},"modified":"2019-09-29T15:03:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-29T13:03:07","slug":"moldova-set-to-build-power-link-with-romania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zdg.md\/en\/moldova-set-to-build-power-link-with-romania\/","title":{"rendered":"Moldova Set to Build Power Link with Romania"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Moldova\u2019s International partners help the country in connecting its electricity network with Romania\u2019s, a critically important step for the diversification of Moldova\u2019s electricity resources.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a press release from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2019\/moldova-set-to-build-power-link-with-romania.html?fbclid=IwAR3Wb3rdkqEcIkOqumGCgYeHFre4c-LQ5DCrGZibllBBZ_11mtHI6Npkqtc\">European Bank for Development and Reconstruction<\/a> (EBRD), published on September 26, Moldova will be able to connect its electricity network with Romania\u2019s thanks to a joint investment from its international partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following an initial \u20ac160 million loan provided by the EBRD and the European Investment Bank (EIB) in equal parts, the European Union (E.U.) is also joining the project with a \u20ac40 million investment grant. The World Bank is providing a $70 million loan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The E.U. grant will co-finance the construction of a 600 MW back-to-back converter substation in Vulc\u0103ne\u0219ti. The World Bank loan will finance the construction of a new 400 kV high-voltage overhead line between Vulc\u0103ne\u0219ti and Moldova\u2019s capital of Chi\u0219in\u0103u, as well as the expansion and upgrade of associated high voltage substations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interconnection is of critical importance for the diversification of Moldova\u2019s electricity resources. Currently, the country depends on a single power plant fuelled by natural gas, oil and coal, and electricity imports from Ukraine for up to 80 percent of its electricity supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The link to the Romanian electrical network will considerably enhance the stability and reliability of its power supply \u2013 a prerequisite for the country\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diversification of electricity resources will open up Moldova\u2019s electricity market to increased competition, with access to the European market generating economic benefits for both companies and citizens. The project will ultimately pave the way towards Moldova\u2019s integration into the European electricity grid operated by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interconnection will be built by Moldova\u2019s public electricity utility Moldelectrica between 2019 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis joint financing operation has been designed as an ambitious and comprehensive energy development project whose overall objective is to increase capacity and improve reliability of the power transmission system in the Republic of Moldova. I am delighted to witness the Government of Moldova making a strategic decision to interconnect asynchronously with Romania, as the optimal solution to resolve the security of supply issue,\u201d <\/em>Moldova\u2019s Finance Minister, Natalia Gavrili\u021b\u0103, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cToday we took a step forward in our effort to help the Republic of Moldova connect to the electricity distribution network of the E.U., which will contribute greatly to the country\u2019s energy security. In the medium-term, the goal is the full integration into the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity. It is a long process but worth the effort,\u201d <\/em>E.U. Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Peter Michalko, added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe signing of the Power System Development Project is a significant milestone for Moldovan authorities on the way to strengthening and diversifying Moldova\u2019s energy infrastructure. The World Bank and our partners \u2013 the European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Investment Bank \u2013 believe that this project will contribute to ensuring a stable and energy-secure future for Moldova,\u201d <\/em>World Bank Country Manager for Moldova, Anna Akhalkatsi, commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EBRD Head of Moldova, Angela Sax, praised the coordinated international effort to support Moldova in improving the reliability of its power supply.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe EBRD is pleased to join forces with the European Union, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank to help Moldova integrate into the European electricity market.
